Bamboo Airways and VietJet Air have firmed up commitments to order 110 Boeing aircraft during a visit by US president Donald Trump to Hanoi.
The two orders are valued at $15.7 billion at list prices, with Bamboo ordering 10 Boeing 787-9s and VietJet 80 Max 10s and 20 737 Max 8s.
Bamboo's order follows from its June 2018 commitment to acquire 20 of the jets. It has not disclosed whether the jets will be powered by General Electric GEnx or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
"Our long-term vision is to connect Vietnam with key markets in Asia, Europe and North America and the Dreamliner will enable us to launch these long-haul operations. The 787's superior operating economics and efficiency, as well as the passenger pleasing interior of the Dreamliner, will allow us to successfully grow our business while enabling us to better serve our customers," says Trinh Van Quyet, chairman of Bamboo's parent company FLC Group.
At the same time, low-cost carrier VietJet Air firmed up the 737 Max commitment that was announced last June at the Farnborough air show. That doubles the number of 737s it has on order, after the airline placed an order for 100 high-density 737 Max 8s in 2016. It has also become the largest Asian customer for the 737 Max 10.
"The deal for 200 Boeing 737 Max airplanes today is an important move for us to keep up with our international flight network expansion plan with a higher capacity, thus offering our passengers with more exciting experiences when being able to fly to more new international destinations," says VietJet Air's president and chief executive Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao.
Both orders were previously attributed to unidentified customers on Boeing's orders and deliveries website.
