Scandinavian carrier SAS is considering whether to convert part of its Airbus A320neo order to the long-range A321LR.
SAS has taken delivery of 19 A320neos from a previous order for 30 of the re-engined type, and it place another order for 35 more in mid-April.
These additional 35 aircraft will be complemented with a further 15 A320neos to be obtained through lessors.
SAS chief executive Rickard Gustafson, speaking during a third-quarter briefing, said the carrier was “running the numbers” on a possible switch to the A321LR.
“I believe the A321LR could be an attractive aircraft that can unlock new markets in the long-haul space,” he says. “That’s something we’re looking into.”
He says the company has not reached any decision on whether it would be better to convert Airbus orders or source them through a different channel.
SAS already operates the larger A321 within its fleet.
