The judges of the 1996 Flight International Aerospace Industry Awards have announced the shortlists from which winners will be revealed at the Awards Gala Dinner in Singapore on 8 February. They are:

MILITARY

McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Transport Aircraft: for the successful introduction into service of the C-17

Daimler-Benz Aerospace/Rockwell Aerospace: for the development and demonstration of the X-31 research aircraft

Pilatus Britten-Norman: for the development and certification of the unique Defender 4000

SPACE & MISSILES

Groupe Cisi: for the establishment of the SPOT/Helios satellite-management centre

Martin-Baker Aircraft: for the development of the descent control system for the Huygens Titan probe

Matra Marconi Space: for achievements in 1995 with the Eurostar satellite platform

SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS

CTT Systems: for the development and introduction of a zonal drying system for aircraft

Messier Bugatti: for the development of the brake-by-wire braking system of the Dassault Falcon 2000

Sextant Avionique: for the Category IIIB certification of a head-up display on the Boeing 737

Smiths Industries Aerospace: for the certification of the electrical load-management system of the Boeing 777

HELICOPTERS

McDonnell Douglas Helicopters: for the development of the AH-64D Longbow Apache

ENVIRONMENT

GE Aircraft Engines: for the development of the dual annular combustor for the CFM-56

Manchester Airport: for its corporate environment plan

PZL-Swidnik Polish Aviation Works: for the introduction of new environmentally friendly production techniques

INFRASTRUCTURE

Federal Aviation Administration (USA): for the development of rules allowing early entry into service of extended-range twinjet operations-capable aircraft

Macau International Airport: for the on-time/on-budget development of a new airport on reclaimed land

New Zealand Airways Corporation: for the introduction of the first satellite-based oceanic traffic-control system

CORPORATE STRATEGY

Lockheed Martin: for the successful implementation of a major merger

Regional Airlines: for the success of its expansion and re-alignment

AIR TRANSPORT

Bombardier Regional Aircraft: for the impact of the Canadair Regional Jet on short-haul services

Cathay Pacific Airlines: for the introduction of cross-crew qualification on its Airbus A330/340 fleet

Sun Country Airlines: for the first approved use of the global-positioning system as the primary sole means of navigation

SAFETY& TRAINING

Because of the huge spread of entries and the difficulty in rating training and safety entries against each other, the judges have split this category in two, and made separate awards for safety and training.

SAFETY

Federal Aviation Administration (USA): for its international safety assessments and their impact on international air transport

BF Goodrich Rosemount Aerospace: for the successful demonstration of a new ultrasonic ice/contaminant-detection system

TRAINING

China Airlines/University of North Dakota: for the development of its "Jet Spectrum" training system

Singapore Aviation Academy: for its performance in training in the Asian market

BUSINESS & GENERAL AVIATION

Raytheon Aircraft: for its development of a control-by-light system for general-aviation aircraft

Rockwell Collins Commercial Avionics: for the successful integration and certification of the avionics for the Canadair Challenger 604

INTERNATIONAL AEROSPACE PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

No shortlist is published for this category, for which entry was by nomination. The name of the winner only will be announced on 8 February.

MAINTENANCE

Although they admired the standards exhibited by the entrants, the judges felt that no entry satisfied their criteria of measurable, universally significant, achievement identified with 1995, and have therefore decided not to make an award.

The judges were: Sir Donald Spiers, president of the Royal Aeronautical Society; Max Bleck, former president of Raytheon; Boon Swan Foo, president of Singapore Technologies Aerospace; and Mike Ambrose, director-general of the European Regional Airlines Association; with Flight International editor Allan Winn as chairman.
