Flight Safety International during the first half of 2012 plans to install a glass mirror on a Sikorsky S-76 simulator at its West Palm Beach, Florida facility.
Use of the glass mirror is part of a long-term plan by the company to replace mylar mirrors in simulators with glass to remove edge and band distortion, explains Flight Safety International VP of simulation Rick Armstrong.
Flight Safety envisions pushing the glass mirrors into a wide field of systems, Armstrong explains, citing an accurate up and down view in simulator for an aircraft like the KC-46A or for helicopters landing on oil rigs.
The glass mirrors will be manufactured at Flight Safety's facility focussed on simulator displays in Austin, Texas.
