FLIR SYSTEMS HAS introduced a fully stabilised aerial-camera system for news gathering, which combines a thermal imager with a television camera. A Portland, Oregon, television station will be the first customer for the Ultra 4000 day/night airborne-camera system.

The Ultra 4000 combines FLIR Systems' SAFIRE thermal imager with a Sony charge-coupled-device camera. The camera gimbal provides 360° rotation and full look-down capability and mounts directly to fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. Three-axis gyro-stabilisation is provided.

Portland-based FLIR Systems has also introduced the UltraMedia, a compact, lightweight, broadcast-camera system designed to be nose-mounted on helicopters. The 34kg system provides five-axis stabilisation and a 36:1 magnification capability.
