FLIR Systems, the Portland, Oregon-based infrared (IR) thermal and visual imaging specialist, plans to unveil a new version of its digital Ultra Media aerial-broadcast camera system for television news helicopters at April's US National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Las Vegas.

The Ultra Media III incorporates a Sony BVP-570 camera and a 1,000mm Canon lens, new internal stabilisation, offering "virtually jitter-free images", and a wide format capability.

The company, which introduced the Ultra 7000 dual-sensor camera system for police aerial units at the US Helicopter Association International meeting in January, has also shipped the initial units of its Star SAFIRE II IR imaging system, launched at the show.

To date, FLIR has delivered two SAFIRE II's to Canada for ocean and fishery patrol use, while a third system has been sent to Germany, where it will be used for environmental monitoring work.
