Marine pilots at Florida's busiest port are being assisted by the ARINC PilotMate portable GPS satellite navigation system (Hall 4, A15).

The Tampa Bay Pilots' Association has purchased 24 PilotMate units, which combine the latest differential GPS capability with an advanced computer display.

By connecting to the ship's onboard automatic information system (AIS), this provides better position detail than shipboard radar or AIS alone.

PilotMate was developed in conjunction with the pilots of Long Beach and is already in use at both Long Beach and Los Angeles harbours.
