Windtunnel testing of the Mono Tilt Rotor (MTR) concept has demonstrated aerodynamic deployment of the folding wing, a key feature of the design patented by Baldwin Technology. Tests in a University of Maryland tunnel of a parametric research model lacking the MTR’s single coaxial proprotor demonstrated simultaneous aerodynamic deployment of the left and right wing panels. Under a US Army contract, Baldwin is working on preliminary design of a subscale MTR demonstrator that can carry 1,800kg (4,000lb) over 1,300km (700nm) at 200kt (370km/h), but can fold to fit inside a 6.1m (20ft) ISO container.
