FRENCH AND ISRAELI companies have revealed contracts to supply equipment for the MAPO-MiG upgrade of Indian air force MiG-21s. Sextant Avionique has secured a deal to supply its Totem inertial-navigation system (INS), to equip five prototypes and a further 125 Mig-21s.

The French avionics supplier is also to equip the Indian Light Combat Aircraft with its head-up and head-down displays, as part of what it calls "the beginning of a long-term collaboration" with the Indian air force and industry. Sextant will provide some of the work to Indian industry.

The Israeli defence industry's involvement in the upgrade continues to grow, with Israel Military Industries selected to supply the chaff-and-flare dispensers. The work is worth $9 million. Israel's Elta recently won an $80 million contract to supply the electronic-warfare systems for the MiG-21.
