THE FRENCH DEFENCE ministry is considering the conversion of its Plateau d'Albion missile base into a multi-service helicopter-training site for the Eurocopter Tiger and the NH Industries NH90.

A decision to withdraw the M-3 strategic nuclear missile from service was taken as part of the latest round of French defence cuts. The missiles are due to be taken out of service within two to three years.

Several hundred pilots could attend the proposed helicopter school, which would cover training on the Tiger attack helicopter, and the utility and anti-submarine variants of the NH90.

The proposal has been, broadly welcomed by the military, but with less enthusiasm by locals.
