France is considering joining the UK's Skynet 5 military communications satellite programme, rather than continuing working with Germany in the Trimilsatcom project, from which the UK pulled out last month.

Armand Carlier, chairman and chief executive of Matra Marconi Space (MMS), which leads one of the teams bidding for the Skynet 5 contract, revealed the decision by the French Government to look at the Skynet 5 option, saying that it "-makes sense-it is certainly worth studying this solution".

Carlier reveals that Motorola has joined the MMS-led team to bid for the Skynet 5 contract in competition with a Lockheed Martin consortium.
