Two cargo aircraft arriving to load aid for the Sudan were severely damaged or written off on runway 09/27 at Lokichokio, Kenya on 10 June. A 748 Air Services BAe 748 twin turboprop (5Y-SFE) suffered gear failure as it landed on the 1,800m-long runway and it collapsed onto its belly. The three crew were uninjured, but the aircraft blocked the runway. Later the same day a United Nations World Food Programme Lockheed L-100 Hercules (S9-BAS) attempted to set down on the remaining runway, but landed hard and its fuselage failed behind the wingbox. There were no injuries. Meanwhile on 13 June at Fort Lauderdale Executive airport in Florida, a 1952 manufactured Air Pony Express Douglas R4D-8 – the Navy version of the DC-3 – suffered a No1 engine fire soon after take-off and crashed into a residential area. The three people on board the aircraft (N3906J) and two on the ground were injured.
