Sir - I am a pilot with a UK regional airline seeking employment with some of the major scheduled and charter carriers, to further my career.

It is frustrating to be told by some airlines that they are not recruiting, and do not foresee doing so, only to hear later that they have just taken on pilots.

Some airlines advertise in your pages for pilots, others do not. I made a telephone enquiry to one company and was told not to bother writing unless I had a Boeing 737 rating and, if I still felt like writing, to enclose a stamped addressed envelope for an acknowledgement.

What is required to get one's foot through the door? Do I write intermittently to those who do not advertise in the hope of eventual success?

It would be nice if applicants were treated with a bit more respect and at least sent an acknowledgement. After all, there will be a pilot shortage in the future, as in previous cycles.

I invite chief pilots to comment.
