The early lead set by Continental Airlines, British Airways and Qantas in imposing a passenger fuel surcharge has so far been followed by Air New Zealand, KLM, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. BA announced in mid-May that it planned to charge an extra £2.50 ($4.40) on each leg of a journey. However, in Europe, Ryanair and easyJet are resisting the move, arguing that the market will not sustain such a rise.
