The US Air Force has picked Alliant Techsystems to undertake an initial $16 million engineering and manufacturing development pro- gramme for 100 hard target smart fuses to be used on deep penetration, hard target munitions. The fuse will be detonated at a pre-determined point by using an accelerometer, a capability required to destroy buried underground targets with weapons such as the GBU-28 laser-guided bomb.
