GEC-Marconi Avionics and Honeywell have signed a memorandum of understanding to modify and market a derivative of their jointly produced business-jet head-up display (HUD) for commercial airliners.

The move is designed to challenge the growing strength of Sextant Avionique and, particularly, Flight Dynamics in the market, the latter having gained a major slice of the Boeing 737 business with significant orders for its Headup Guidance System (HGS) from carriers such as Southwest Airlines. The HGS has also been picked as standard equipment on the Boeing Business Jet.

The commercial HUD will be based on the HUD 2020 used on the Gulfstream IV-SP and V, and which recently received US Federal Aviation Administration Category II certification. The HUD will be marketed for retrofit and forward fit, with Honeywell providing the symbol generator and GEC-Marconi providing the pilot's overhead display unit.
