GERMANY'S Government-appointed environmental advisory panel has recommended a tax on aviation fuel on domestic routes.

It is estimated that a kerosene tax equivalent to that already paid on diesel fuel would raise the cost of flying in Germany by 20%. In the long term, Ewers supports a tax covering the whole of the European Union - a move supported by the German Government.

The call has been greeted with scepticism by German airlines, which believe that it is unrealistic. Flag carrier Lufthansa says: "Our aircraft fly international routes, which can link directly into domestic routes, so it would be very complicated to enforce [such a law]."
