German investigators are looking into the loss of an engine cowl from a Eurowings Airbus A330-200 which had departed Cologne for Palma de Mallorca.
The aircraft was operating flight 4U592 and apparently shed the component during take-off on 20 October.
Eurowings says part of the cowl from the left-hand engine “detached” and was found “next to the runway” at Cologne-Bonn airport. The aircraft had taken off from runway 14L.
Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer tool indicates that the aircraft involved (D-AXGA) is a General Electric CF6-powered airframe leased from GECAS.
The airline states that there were “no signs” that the component was absent and the crew was informed only once the A330 was operating in French airspace.
Since there was no evidence that the safety of the aircraft was compromised, it adds, the pilots opted to continue the flight to Palma, where it landed just before 09:00 and was subsequently examined.
Eurowings says the aircraft had been undergoing maintenance with Lufthansa Technik, and that the firm is co-operating with the investigation.
Lufthansa Technik confirms it had been servicing the jet. It adds that it is co-operating with the carrier as well as the German investigation authority BFU following the incident.
None of the 169 passengers and 13 crew members was injured.
