CAE ELEKTRONIK has received a DM26.9 million ($15.2 million) contract to supply a Panavia Tornado full-mission simulator to be installed at the German air force's US training base at Holloman AFB, New Mexico. The German subsidiary of Canadian simulator manufacturer CAE will deliver the device in early 2000.

The trainer will be based on the design of seven Tornado full-mission simulators previously delivered to the German armed forces. These lack motion systems, but include digital radar-landmass simulation and have digital communication and sound systems. One Tornado simulator has been upgraded with motion and a helmet-mounted visual system under an earlier contract with CAE Elektronik, but the German air force decided not to upgrade the others. The new Holloman simulator will be fitted with a visual system "-later, under a separate contract", says CAE.

CAE also built the Italian air force's Tornado simulators. The Canadian company is expected to bid for a UK contract to build and operate a training centre for Royal Air Force Tornado aircrews.
