The German army has placed an order with STN Atlas for series production of the Small Airborne Target Location System (KZO) unmanned air vehicle (UAV).
According to the manufacturer, the order is worth about DM500 million ($280 million) and covers eight systems for the German army. Each system includes two ground units and 10 air vehicles.
The KZO - also known as the Brevel - was originally developed jointly by France and Germany, and completed its maiden flight in July 1995. France has backed out of the partnership. The unit is designed to detect and relay the position of targets to the ground control station tracking the UAV.
