GKN Aerospace (booth 4918) is demonstrating new blisk technology at NBAA this year. Blisks are a bladed disk – a one-piece part for
aerospace compressors.
In the business jet sector, GKN Aerospace - Engine Products is already supplying blisks for the CFE738 Honeywell engine used on the Dassault Falcon 2000, with plans to continue expanding GKN’s blisk business.
“Forecasts indicate that the largest area of growth in business aviation is expected to be in the medium to large business jet category,” says Mike Beck, chief executive, engine products, GKN.
The new, larger 7,000-12,000lb thrust (31-53kN) engines are designed using blisks in the fan/compressor as opposed to bladed discs, since they not only reduce the parts count and manufacturing lead times, but are also lighter and more efficient. GKN Aerospace - Engine Products is also positioning itself to supply complete engine modules, whereby GKN would be responsible for the development, manufacture and supply chain management of the module
before delivery to the customer for final integration into the engine.
“The business aviation industry is looking at how they are going to meet increasing demand,” says Frank Bamford, senior vice-president of business development and strategy. “Many companies are talking about new aircraft and new engines, and looking at ways to drive cost down.”
Bamford notes that reducing costs can be achieved through new technology, such as GKN’s blisk technology, as well as simplifications of aircraft and processes, which GKN also supports with its new module delivery model.
The company has achieved growth across its aeroengine business, both organically and through the acquisition of Teleflex Aerospace Manufacturing Group, a leading manufacturer of complex engine components.
Simultaneously, the company is maintaining and growing its integrated propulsion systems business.
