The flight crew of a Gol Boeing 737-700 declared emergency following two go-arounds while attempting to land at Imperatriz in an incident on 5 February.
The aircraft, registration PR-VBI, eventually diverted to Sao Luis and landed uneventfully. After the aircraft's CFM International CFM56 engines were shut down, there was 550kg of fuel remaining, says a report by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which is assisting in the investigation.
Brazil's aeronautical safety agency CENIPA is leading the investigation.
In its report, which cites CENIPA as the source of the information, the NTSB says the aircraft's crew had executed a go-around on its initial approach into Imperatriz-Prefeito Renato Moreira airport due to an "unstabilised approach".
The crew then performed another go-around on the second approach because fog was obscuring the runway. This was followed by a declaration of emergency due to low fuel.
The aircraft diverted to Marechal Cunha Machado International airport in Sao Luis, and landed uneventfully at 23:40.
None of the 52 passengers on the aircraft was injured, and the aircraft was not damaged, says the NTSB.
