Goodrich is the latest Western firm to be selected as a systems supplier for Sukhoi Civil Aircraft's Russian Regional Jet (RRJ). The US company will supply the wheel and braking system for the planned family of 60-, 75- and 95-seat aircraft, working closely with landing-gear supplier Messier-Dowty.

Sukhoi plans a kick-off meeting with suppliers later this month before involving them in a joint definition phase that will last from February to April and lead to an official launch in June, when it will sign formal contracts with risk-sharing partners. The Russian manufacturer is looking for at least 50 orders from four airlines before it formally launches the RRJ programme.

Goodrich will supply wheels, carbon brakes, brake-by-wire control system, and tyre-pressure and brake-temperature sensors, with deliveries beginning in the fourth quarter of 2005. First flight is planned for mid-2006, leading to certification in 2007. The RRJ will be available with an eight-wheel main gear for Russian and CIS airliners operating from poorly paved runways, and a four-wheel system for other customers.

Goodrich, which was to supply a similar wheel and braking system for the defunct Fairchild Dornier 728/928, says the RRJ win gives it a presence in the large regional jet market. The company says it chose not to bid "aggressively" to supply wheels and brakes for the Chinese ARJ21 regional jet.
