Interstate Electronics of California has shipped the first global positioning system (GPS) receiver designed for use in a rocket-assisted projectile. The miniature receiver fits into a 127mm (5in) US Navy shell, and can acquire GPS signals within seconds of clearing the barrel of the upgraded Mk45 deck-mounted gun. The GPS receiver at the heart of the smart shell has been ruggedised to survive the 16-millisecond, 12.5kg (27lb) setback and 2kg lateral gun shock.
