The Greek armed forces have concluded a deal to buy more Boeing CH-47D Chinooks and are close to finalising a deal for US-supplied AGM-142 Have Nap stand-off missiles.

According to industry sources, the Clinton Administration will shortly notify the US Congress of its intention to sell an undisclosed number of AGM-142s to Greece.

The 80km (27 mile)-range AGM-142 was developed as the Popeye by Israeli munitions company Rafael. AGM-142s are now being manufactured in Troy, Alabama, by PGSUS, a Lockheed Martin/ Rafael joint venture.

The US foreign military sale was approved after Israel agreed to licensed production of up to $200 million worth of the Israeli-developed missiles in Turkey.

"The Greeks are just now coming on board," the sources say.

Greece's army has placed an order for seven additional CH-47Ds under a more than $200 million FMS deal. Deliveries will start in 2001.
