The UK is the shock latest prospect for the Saab JAR39 Gripen, says Bob Kemp, sales and marketing director of Gripen International.

Kemp says discussions have been held with QinetiQ and the Empire Test Pilots' School (ETPS), with a view to replacing the school's ageing Sepecat Jaguars and Panavia Tornados with Gripens.

"This would be good for ETPS, which would have a fourth generation, world class aircraft that they could operate for about one-tenth of the cost of a Tornado.

Kemp is clearly optimistic that the deal could go ahead, saying: "I'd like to think they'll be biting my arm off by Christmas."
