Eurocopter has launched a growth version of its Super Puma transport helicopter, the MkIII, that will bring it closer to matching the new Sikorsky S-92 in the offshore exploration market.

The new variant will be ready for European Joint Aviation Authorities certification and delivery at the end of 2001. While it is aimed initially at the civil market, Eurocopter says that a new Cougar military version will also be offered.

The main change is a 25% increase in cabin volume, from 15m3 (530ft3) to 20m3, and an extra 4-5% power from the Turboméca Makila turboshaft. The cabin will be grown in all three dimensions, by 350mm in height, 700mm in length and 250mm in width.

The dynamic system remains the same, although the maximum take-off weight increases, from 9.3t to 10t, bringing an extra 400kg in useable payload. Eurocopter says that it is "too early" to say whether some of this will be available for extra fuel.

Sales of the Super Puma and Cougar stand at a combined total of 540 machines, and Eurocopter says it expects the MkIII to account for "around 200" further orders.
