Guangzhou Baiyun International airport is eyeing up to 14 new destinations to the USA and Europe over the next three years.
Speaking to FlightGlobal at World Routes in Guangzhou, its chairman Qui Jiachen did not disclose the exact destinations, but says its network expansion will primarily be driven by its home base carrier China Southern, which is expanding its fleet.
"China Southern is taking a large number of widebody aircraft over the next few years and we now have the space to accommodate more passengers with our new Terminal 2," says Qui.
Flight Fleets Analyzer lists China Southern as having two Airbus A330-300s, 20 A350-900s and 14 Boeing 787-9s on order.
FlightGlobal schedules data shows China Southern operates to European destinations including London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Rome, and US cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
In April, Guangzhou Baiyun airport opened its new Terminal 2 for operations, two months later than planned, with China Southern anchoring the terminal.
The 880,700sqm terminal has an annual design capacity of 45 million, with 397 check-in counters, many of which are automated. The new terminal will help in the airport’s development as an international hub.
Last year, Guangzhou Baiyun handled 65.8 million passengers, up 10.2% from the year before, and well above its design capacity of 40 million. Throughput is expected to hit 70 million this year.
