CONCURRENT Computer and Harris Computer Systems, which are due to complete their merger in 1996, have formed technical teams to evaluate their competing real-time computers, with the aim of combining the best features of both in a joint next-generation product.

The merger will create a company with the resources to fight off growing competition for the real-time market from new entrants Silicon Graphics and Digital Equipment, says Harris Computer president Corky Siegel, who will be president of the yet-to-be-named merged company.

The two companies, which together will have annual sales of around $170 million, also hope that consolidation will help to reverse losses, Siegel says.

He indicates, that the next generation product will be based on, the Power PC processor used in Harris Computers' Night Hawk family, rather than the MIPS processor, which is used in Concurrent's competing Maxion.

Siegel says that the company will continue to support Maxion customers and will ensure that software developed for the computer will run on the new product.
