After more than 30 years and millions of hours of in-service time, the Pratt & Whitney JT9D turbofan's longevity is being extended, thanks to high-tech repairs by Barnes Aerospace's Windsor Airmotive division.

In conjunction with P&W and the US Federal Aviation Administration, Connecticut-based Windsor Airmotive has developed two major exhaust case repairs. Although complex, the repairs are a cost-effective method of re-establishing original life expectancy. One of the repairs replaces the entire outer wall of the exhaust case.

The company specialises in developing high-tech repairs for turbine engine components, using titanium, inconel, cobalt and other space-age alloys. It also focuses on providing customers with complex airframe and engine components made from exotic, high temperature metals, especially the superplastic forming and diffusion bonding of titanium.
