Honeywell has signed a maintenance service agreement (MSA) with China Southern Group under which the giant American aerospace company will provide maintenance and administration for China Southern's Honeywell 331-500 auxiliary power units (APUs).

The contract, valued at around $8 million, is for five years initially, with an option to extend for a further three.

Todd Inskeep, Honeywell Engines and Systems' marketing director, says: "This is a major new MSA for APUs in Asia and is a part of our growing service business.

"We expect many more such agreements as airlines in the region and elsewhere discover the benefits of stable payment, lower cost of ownership, spare APU guarantee and letting us handle repair administration services for them."

The APUs covered by the agreement are used on China Southern's Boeing 777s. The programme involves nine APUs installed in aircraft, two spares and others to be added through future fleet expansion.

Rated at 202shp, the 331-500 APU provides pneumatic power for main engine starting and pneumatic and electrical power for operation of other aircraft systems on the ground and in the air. It can be started and operated at altitudes up to 43,100ft (13,000m).
