Honeywell's Terrain-Based AutoTilt weather radar system has been installed and certified on a new Boeing 777 for Singapore Airlines.

The system integrates Honeywell's Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) with its RDR-4B air transport weather radar.

The EGPWS terrain database supplies information about the height of the terrain within the selected radar display range, and the tilt angle is automatically set.

If the antenna were aimed too low, the display would show mainly ground; too high and weather could be missed.

"When pilots encounter bad weather, their attention is sometimes focused on other critical tasks," says Frank Daly, president, Air Transport, Honeywell Aerospace Electronic Systems. "Terrain-Based AutoTilt keeps the radar functioning at its optimum all the time, and it reduces pilot workload during some of the busiest times of flight."

This certification is the first provided by an aircraft manufacturer for new production aircraft.
