Hughes Aircraft is to lay off 300 employees, about 40% of the workforce, at its Newport Beach, California, electronics plant because of declining demand for microprocessors for missile systems. Hughes is already cutting its California-based radar-systems group, from 5,500 to 1,200 employees.
