Canada's Adacel and California-based Quantum3D have joined forces to produce and market air traffic control trainers. Since July the companies have clocked up orders for 105 ATC simulators - 94 for the US Air Force, seven for the US Army and four for ENAV, the Italian air traffic control school.

The companies say the key to their success has been the mix of Quantum3D's AAlchemy image generator, providing high-fidelity visual cues, and Adacel's voice-recognition technology that allows accurate responses to the instructions of students. The USAF and ENAV are buying a 135¡ visual display system, while the US Army is acquiring a 270¡ display. "These contracts are opening the doors to others," says Adacel chief executive Lionel Leveille.
