Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) has performed a series of tests with an unmanned version of a commercial helicopter, equipped with systems that allow it to perform both pre-programmed and ground-controlled missions.
IAI sources refuse to specify the helicopter type, but say that the flight control system can be installed on any civil or military helicopter of any size.
The source says the unmanned helicopter is aimed at performing long-endurance missions when a pilot is a limiting factor. “The safety of the unmanned helicopter will allow it to fly people in any type of flight,” says the source.
IAI is using its extensive experience in operating unmanned air vehicles to develop the unmanned helicopter as a commercial system and believes that a market will emerge.
It is believed that the Israeli defence forces are showing interest in the programme, but it is not clear whether they will share development costs.
