Ishikawajima - Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) of Japan is to become a major partner in the General Electric CF34-8C turbofan under the terms of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies.

The announcement confirms persistent rumours of imminent IHI involvement in the engine (Flight International, 8-14 March, P6), which has been selected to power the Canadair CRJ-X stretched regional jet. Under the terms of the MoU IHI "is responsible for the design and manufacture of approximately 25% to 30% of the CF34-8C turbofan engine", says GE.

The two companies are linked in a risk and revenue partnership on the GE90 turbofan.
