The power behind the world’s most sophisticated combat aircraft – the Eurofighter Typhoon – is a major exhibitor here at ILA2008 in the shape of Eurojet the consortium that produces the fighter’s EJ200 engines.

Visitors to the display can examine the advanced technology of the afterburning EJ200 engines - and also take a look inside one of the powerplants through an interactive engine monitor.

Eurojet’s shareholders (Rolls-Royce, Avio, ITP and MTU) have produced an engine that Typhoon pilots rave about.  The engines are both staggeringly powerful, but also reliable, conferring on the aircraft a remarkable rate of climb and also the ability to turn tightly at hitherto undreamed of speeds.

EJ200

Contracted to produce more than 1,500 engines to power a total – so far – of 707 Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft, Eurojet will deliver the 100th ‘Tranche 2’ engine in a June ceremony at Rolls-Royce’s Bristol factory in the UK.

Eurofighter Typhoon in-service experience in the four core nations (Germany, UK, Spain and Italy), along with Austria, has encouraged interest from several air forces around the world and export contracts have already been signed with Austria and Saudi Arabia.

Eurojet’s MD Hartmut Tenter says that EJ200 technology “supersedes its competitors, delivering an outstanding thrust-to-weight ratio with a simple engine architecture”.
