ESA and Hispasat have signed a preliminary authorisation for the Small GEO satellite programme.

Small GEO is a small, general-purpose geostationary satellite that will enable European industry to compete effectively in the commercial telecom market. The first part of the programme covers the development of a platform supporting a payload mass of up to 300 kg, a power demand of up to 3kW, and an operational lifetime of up to 15 years. This second part of the programme, signed at the show, involves the development and launch of a small GEO satellite to provide flight qualification and an in-orbit demonstration.
