A small Russian satellite has been launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite.

Named “Yubileiny”, the satellite will broadcast audio messages, imagery, and beeps similar to those transmitted by Sputnik in 1957. Radio hams around the globe will be able to tune into the satellite on 435.315MHz.

Yubileiny, and three military satellites, were launched aboard a Rokot launch vehicle from the Plesetsk launch site in Russia at the weekend.

The three military vehicles were Gonets spacecraft, which provide data relay services for the Russian military. The Russian space industry is well represented at ILA 2008 with exhibitors including the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Centre and Energia
