Danish company Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is contributing to the high performance to the proposed Airbus A400M by supplying its innovative seals which will help the Europe’s tactical transport programme to tackle difficult conditions ranging from artic cold to the heat and storms of the desert.

Snow and particles need to be stopped from entering the engine head or the air intake cowlings. Trelleborg has designed a special seal for this which are hand-fabricated to standard or custom profiles and are aerodynamically efficient, while offering reliability in service along with efficiency in assembly and maintenance.  The optimum seal remains flexible at extreme temperatures while retaining form and pressure resistance.

A totally different seal is used on the flap of the gearbox of the A400M. A custom designed Turcon PDR seal is used. Bonded to a metal frame is a primary seal in nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). That is combined with an integral Turcon PTFE base environmental sealing element. The NBR sealing element is spring energised to ensure permanent elasticity and sealing force, while Turcon element has excellent friction characteristics and resistance to aggressive media including hydraulic lubricant Skydrol.
