Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) is to supply its M3AR VHF/UHF airborne transceiver as part of BAE Systems Capability Upgrade Strategy (Pilot) (CUS(P)) Programme for the UK Royal Air Force's Tornado GR4.

The M3AR will allow pilots to talk securely to air controllers, E-3 AWACS and R1 ASTOR surveillance aircraft, as well as other combat aircraft.

The transceivers are software-based radios, providing multi-band, multimode and multi-role communications in the UHF and VHF Bands with AM, FM and voice and data communications in normal or EPM (ECCM) modes.

Software-based radios are reprogrammable to minimise obsolescence and give new facilities as they are developed. The M3AR's modular design also ensures that its plug-in modules are easily accessible enabling rapid and economical repair.
