AirAsia is referring to its Airbus A320s fitted with sharklet wing-tips as "Jaws", because they will be taking "a big bite out of our costs", said Zaman Ahmad, AirAsia head of customer experience and technology, at a ceremony at ILA yesterday to announce the Asian low-cost carrier will become the world's first A320 sharklet operator in December.

The airline, which already has 116 A320s in service, is expecting a 3.5% fuel-burn saving on its narrowbodies fitted with sharklets. Airbus head of sales John Leahy says technical experts at the manufacturer tell him the saving will probably be closer to 4%.
