San Francisco-based ProtoStar has raised initial equity funding from New Enterprise Associates and SpaceVest for a proposed three-satellite direct-to-home network serving India and the Far East, with a first launch in mid-2006.
The Indian Space Research Organisation will launch a new satellite, Healthsat, as early as 2009 to allow communications between doctors in remote areas and specialists in city hospitals.
Orbcomm plans to launch a satellite in 2006 that will support the US Coast Guard's Automatic Identification System. It will be based on a German OHB-System bus and will be launched by a Russian Kosmos M booster.
