INDIA IS CLOSE TO placing a $100 million order with Israeli contractor Elta Electronics for as many as 90 radar-jamming pods, for use on Indian air force Mikoyan MiG-21s and Sepecat Jaguars, and Indian navy British Aerospace Sea Harrier FRS.51s.

The system involved is likely to be either Elta's EL-8222 or EL-8224 equipment, both of which are derived from the company's work on the Cerberus system used on Germany's naval Panavia Tornados.

Sources in New Delhi say that, alongside this procurement, India's Bangalore-based Advanced System Integration and Evaluation Organisation is also understood to be developing an indigenous radar-warning receiver which appears to have been flight tested in conjunction with an Elta jamming pod aboard an Indian air force Mikoyan MiG-23.

Competitors for the jamming-pod order are thought to have included Thomson-CSF, with its Barem system, and GEC-Marconi Radar and Defence Systems, with an Apollo variant.
