Pakistani airlines are again allowed to overfly India after a five-month ban was lifted in a move aimed at easing inter-country tensions.

India lifted the ban on 10 June and the New Delhi government said it hoped Pakistan would follow by lifting its own ban on Indian airline overflights that was imposed in retaliation.

India's ban, which prevented Pakistan International Airlines from entering its airspace, was imposed after a 13 December terrorist attack on its parliament building that the government blamed on Pakistan. The country responded in January by banning Indian carriers from using its airspace in a move that affected some Air India operations to Europe.

India's external affairs ministry says the lifting of the ban last week was in response to promises from Pakistan to curb infiltration into the disputed Kashmir region, and says it hopes "the principle of reciprocity will apply".
