The Gas Turbine Research Establishment of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to work with a foreign engine manufacturer to expedite the development of its indigenous Kaveri engine.

The Indian defence ministry says the DRDO has determined that a partnership would reduce risk in the programme and help meet its goal of fielding a production engine for the indigenous HAL Tejas light combat aircraft by 2009.

India last week announced a decision to seek assistance from a foreign manufacturer, acknowledging that the engine was immature.
