The Indian Academy of Sciences in Bangalore has recommended setting up a National Centre for Space Science under the aegis of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The recommendation is made in a vision document for astronomy and astrophysics that highlights the need for Indian astronomers to collaborate in major international projects.

“One must be aware of the ever- widening gap between state-of-the art facilities abroad and what we can realistically hope to have in India,” says the document. “The next-generation facilities being planned are so expensive that even the USA cannot raise the required resources.”
