The Indian Government plans to corporatise the airports of Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and establish guidelines for setting up a regulatory authority, according to N K Singh, an official in the Prime Minister's Office. A regulatory body has been recommended by a high-level task force on infrastructure development.

The authority would deal with issues relating to charges, disputes and safety, including maintaining a level playing field and acting as a watchdog for the domestic airport industry. The Airport Authority of India will seek outside expertise to assist in corporatising the three airports. Civil aviation minister Ananth Kumar, however, says that corporatisation does not imply a sell-off but simply envisages the creation of a system which would simplify transactions with private parties.
