The Indian civil aviation minister C M Ibrahim has revived plans to merge Air India and Indian Airlines. The ambitious project will apparently be completed by the end of this year and will return the carriers to profitability in 1998. In the year to 31 March, Air India lost $78 million and Indian Airlines $9.4 million. The state will pump $90 million into the domestic operator as part of the merger.
