Russi Mody, joint chairman of Air India and Indian Airlines, has set up a committee to draw up merger proposals for the two state carriers. The proposed joint airline is tentatively called Airways India. Indian Airlines may take over all operations to the 'near abroad' - the carrier already operates to the Middle East and southeast Asia.
